Labor Day weekend may signal the end of summer, but in sunny San Diego summer continues! But in the spirit of the holiday, the city has got it goin’ on over the long weekend!

Here’s a hit list for making the absolute most of it.

The Dance Scene

Crowded outdoor block party in a city lot with a stage, tents, and a QUARTYARD banner, lively and bustling.
Located in the East Village, Quartyard is just a 15 minute walk from the Gaslamp Quarter.

  • FNGRS CRSSD Presents Partiboi69 (Friday, Sept 4): Kick off the long weekend at Spin Nightclub in Old Town for full-throttle electro, ghetto tech, and high-bpm tracks starting at 9:00 PM.

  • Reggaeton Rave at NOVA SD (Sunday, Sep 6): Head to NOVA in the Gaslamp for a late-night Latin beat and reggaeton surge.

  • R&B Block Party at Quartyard (Labor Day Weekend): Downtown’s open-air shipping-container venue hosts a soulful afternoon party complete with food trucks, craft brews, and solid grooves.

Sunburn and Sunsets

  • Rent WaveRunners or Charter a Duffy Boat or a Hot Tub Pontoon Boat: Grab a crew and head to Mission Bay or Kona Kai Marina to rent jet skis, paddleboards, or electric Duffy boats and pontoons for a bay cruise.

Group in swimsuits relaxing on a hot tub cruise boat on clear blue water, with HOT TUB CRUISIN text on the stern.
Cruise the bay with 12 friends by the hour!
  • Sunset Bonfires at OB or Fiesta Island: Snag a fire pit early at Ocean Beach or Fiesta Island. Bring s'mores, portable speakers, and beach chairs to watch the sun dip into the Pacific. Remember to arrive early to secure a fire pit.

  • Day-Club Rooftop Pools: Beat the heat at open-air pool venues like The Westin Downtown, Solamar, or the retro-chic Lafayette Hotel in North Park.

Local Eats & Street Markets

  • Lane Field Park Street Food Market: Located right on North Harbor Drive along the bay, this weekend setup packs 30+ street food stalls, lawn games, and live music. Open 10-4 Saturdays and Sundays.

  • Little Italy Farmers Market (Saturday Morning): Fuel up with iced lattes, empanadas, and fresh pastries while strolling through San Diego's most flavorful neighborhood.

  • Hillcrest Farmers Market: Arguably the largest of the markets, this weekend event features ready-to-eat meals, fresh food, clothing and jewelry.

Keeping Costs Down so there’s more $$ for the Fun Stuff

Red MTS Green Line trolley train 4050 on city tracks beside buildings and trees in bright daylight.
Transit is only $2.50 a ride in San Diego
  1. Leverage the Trolley: Rideshare apps hit massive surge prices around Gaslamp and the beach towns over holiday weekends. The San Diego Trolley picks up right by Gaslamp Hostel and bridges Downtown, Old Town, and Little Italy effortlessly.

  2. Use Parking Apps: Downtown has surge pricing for parking meters as well and area parking garages also bump their prices. Use a parking app like SpotHero to find deals. Also, one hostel downtown has discounted parking passes for their guests and they always keep the same rate.

Skip the Hotel, try a Hostel: During peak holiday weekends, San Diego hotel rates hit eye-watering levels. Crash-landing at a hostel isn't just a budget cheat code—it’s an instant social cheat code.

  • Instant Built-In Squad: Hostels are magnet hubs for solo travelers and groups looking to venture out. You’ll assemble a crew for taco runs, day parties, and splitting Ubers within ten minutes of dropping your bags.

  • Prime Real Estate: Several San Diego hostels sit on prime land, putting you right into the Gaslamp Quarter or literally steps from the beach boardwalk.

Expect privacy curtains on dorm pods, free light breakfast, beach towels and sunscreen and central air conditioning! (which few hostels have in the city).

  • ITH Beach Bungalow Surf Hostel (Pacific Beach): Positioned directly on the PB boardwalk, you can wake up and walk straight into the surf. They offer on-site board rentals, an oceanside deck for socializing, and daily sunset gatherings right on the sand.

  • Samesun Ocean Beach (Ocean Beach): Located right on Newport Avenue in OB, Samesun puts you seconds away from legendary taco stands, vintage shops, and the famous OB pier sunset crowd.
