Getting to San Diego for NYE

Whether you're coming from up the coast or across the desert, here are the best ways to get to the San Diego nightlife and transportation tips to help you celebrate safely.

1. From Los Angeles (LA)

Transportation

Details

NYE Considerations

Amtrak Pacific Surfliner

Runs from LA Union Station directly to Santa Fe Depot (Downtown San Diego). Beautiful, scenic coastal route. Fastest train ride is about 2 hours 40 minutes.

Check the holiday schedule! This is the most relaxing option to avoid traffic. Book tickets far in advance.

Bus Service

Companies like FlixBus and Greyhound offer multiple trips daily. Drop-off points are often in Downtown or Old Town San Diego.

Cheapest option. Travel time varies significantly based on traffic (2.5 to 5+ hours).

Driving

Take the I-5 South. Distance is about 120 miles.

Heavy Traffic Warning: Expect significant delays, especially on I-5 South on the day of and I-5 North on New Year's Day. Parking downtown is extremely limited and expensive.

2. From North County San Diego (Oceanside, Encinitas, Carlsbad, Solana Beach)

The best choice for North County residents is public transit, which offers special extended service and free rides on New Year's Eve.

  • NCTD COASTER Train: This commuter train connects Oceanside, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Solana Beach, and other coastal North County cities directly to the Santa Fe Depot in Downtown San Diego.

    • NYE Special: The North County Transit District (NCTD) typically offers free rides after 6 p.m. and adds extra late-night trains running past midnight to get you home safely. Check the NCTD website for the final extended schedule (e.g., a last northbound train often departs downtown around 1:20 a.m. or later).

3. From Las Vegas (LV)

Transportation

NYE Considerations

Flying

Non-stop flights (Southwest, Alaska, Delta) from Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) to San Diego International Airport (SAN) take about 1 hour 15 minutes.

This is the fastest method, but book early for holiday prices. SAN airport is a short ride from Downtown/Gaslamp.

Driving

Take the I-15 South. Distance is about 330 miles (5-6 hour drive).

Warning: The I-15 is prone to holiday traffic congestion, especially returning to Las Vegas on New Year's Day. Check conditions before you leave.

Bus Service

Companies like FlixBus and Tufesa offer daily direct or one-stop routes from the Las Vegas area to San Diego.

A significantly longer trip (7-10+ hours), but a cost-effective alternative to flying or driving.

Where to Stay: Spend your $$ to celebrate not sleep!

Downtown San Diego hotel prices surge significantly for New Year's Eve. Why blow hundreds on a luxury hotel room when you'll only be using it to crash for a few hours? Save that money for drinks, merch, and tickets by choosing a conveniently located, budget-friendly Hostel.

Featured Budget Stay: Gaslamp Hostel

Located right in the heart of the action, the Gaslamp Hostel is a fantastic choice for music fans and party-goers. It's just a short walk from Petco Park and the Gaslamp Quarter's nightclubs.

  • Exceptional Location: Rated highly for location, it’s only 0.4 miles (a 5-10 minute walk) from Petco Park, placing you right where the Proper NYE festival is happening.

  • Budget-Friendly: Offers both private rooms and secure dorms, making it significantly cheaper than a holiday hotel.

  • Bunk bed with blue bedding in a room with teal walls. Space-themed art on walls, white dresser, chair, and a bright, cozy atmosphere.
Bunk bed private rooms are perfect for those wanting the hostel vibe but still some privacy

Amenities: Free continental breakfast (cereal, oatmeal, etc.), free high-speed WiFi, secure electronic entry, and luggage storage.

  • Comfort & Privacy: Even in the dorms, you get privacy panels, a personal light, shelf, and electrical outlets for secure charging. Lower bunks often include curtains.

Bunk beds with blue lighting in a cozy brick-walled room. Walls feature historical photos and newspaper prints; open door at the end.
Gaslamp Hostel has both female only and mixed gender dorms. All linens are provided.
  • The Vibe: Housed in a historic, colorful Victorian building (which is also haunted!), it has a communal, social atmosphere, perfect for meeting other travelers and festival attendees.

Bright hallway with painted walls, colorful doors, and patterns. Cushioned seating, plants on staircase, and "Love and Peace" sign visible.
Brighten up your socials feed with images from this super eclectic and colorful hostel
