Colorful hallway with murals, plants, and orange couches. Doors labeled "212" and "213." Sign reads "Love and Peace." Warm, inviting atmosphere.
Gaslamp Hostel's colorful interior and greenery help guests feel relaxed.

Attending a major event at the San Diego Convention Center usually comes with a side of "sticker shock" when you look at hotel prices. With downtown rates often tripling during peak weeks, savvy professionals are looking for a smarter alternative.

If you’re heading to San Diego in 2026, staying at the Gaslamp Hostel isn't just a budget move—it’s a strategic choice that places you exactly where you need to be.

In recent years, many major hotel chains have scaled back their services, often eliminating daily housekeeping and cutting out complimentary breakfast entirely. You end up paying more for less.

At Gaslamp Hostel, we believe your convention budget should go further.

  • We provide a light, breakfast of cereals, oatmeal, and fresh fruit to get you out the door and fueled for those long morning sessions, along with coffee, tea and hot chocolate.

  • While many hotels now only clean rooms upon request or every few days, we clean all our rooms daily.

You might be surprised by the professional crowd you’ll meet here. Gaslamp Hostel has become a preferred "home base" for a diverse range of convention-goers, including:

  • Medical Professionals: From nurses to researchers attending massive healthcare and biotech symposiums.

  • Trade Show Exhibitors: Smart vendors who would rather spend their budget on booth displays than an overpriced hotel bed.

  • Educators & Academics: Frequent guests during large-scale educational conferences and university summits.

  • And, of course, Comic Con: No hotel or hostel in town loves the Con more than we do! The owners join the queue each year to snag their own tickets. We even have a dorm room dedicated to the annual event and have a welcome gift and prizes!

Location is everything when you have an 8:00 AM keynote or a booth to set up. We are situated right on 5th Avenue, putting you in the heart of the historic Gaslamp Quarter.

You are less than a 10-minute stroll from the Convention Center. While other attendees are fighting for $40 Ubers, you’re arriving at the floor in minutes. And, you’re steps away from the city's best dining, nightlife, and essential grocery runs at the nearby Ralph’s.

Purple hostel kitchen with steel counters, colorful skull art, and a "FIESTA" sign. Bright blue ceiling, utensils, and an orange ladle.
From 8 am to 10:30 am the hostel offers cereals, oatmeal, fresh fruit and coffee, tea and hot chocolate.

In our common areas or shared kitchen, you’re almost guaranteed to bump into someone attending the same event. Whether you’re swapping tips on the best breakout sessions or finding a group to grab a craft beer with after a long day, the social atmosphere is built-in.

Teal-walled bedroom with a bed, desk, and chair. Orange curtains frame a window. Lamp-lit, cozy setting with a calm, inviting mood.
We offer standard and superior private rooms that vary in size and location. Please note: all bathrooms are in the hallway and are mixed gender.

And it’s not all dorm beds either. If you need your own space to recharge and decompress after a day of sensory overload, we offer private rooms. You get the privacy you need at a fraction of the cost of the "Big Box" hotels nearby.

We also have 4-bed and 6-bed private rooms so if you’re traveling with a team, we can ensure you all stay together.

All dorm beds have a light, shelf and outlet. Lower beds have curtains as well.

If you're eyeing the ASU+GSV Summit, the AACR Annual Meeting, ESRT, Comic-Con or any of the myriad of conferences this year, start looking now because we generally book out for all major events.
