San Diego on a Budget

Don’t let gas prices and inflation curb your good time!

Let’s be real: San Diego is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, but it can also be a total wallet-drainer. Between the $18 cocktails and the $40 overnight parking, "America’s Finest City" often feels like it's reserved for people with a much higher tax bracket than most people.

But here’s the secret: You can do a high-vibe weekend in SD without living on ramen for the rest of the month. You just need to know where to sleep, where to park, and when to drink.

Here is your blueprint for a cheap (but not "cheap-looking") San Diego getaway.

Amtrak train 457 rides along coastal cliffs above a beach and ocean on a sunny day.

1.      Take the Train

If you live up the coast in LA and don’t feel like wasting gas on the 405 parking lot, hop the surfliner. You’ll get free wifi, a comfy seat, a scenic view and room to walk around on the 3 hour ride to the Santa Fe Depot in San Diego. But if you choose to drive, be sure to leave LA around 10 am and you’ll avoid traffic and make it to the city in 2 to 2 ½ hours.

2.      Shop for airfares on Tuesdays

Check the traveler blogs. Must state that Tuesdays are a great day to shop for cheaper fares! You can sign up for Google travel alerts as well if your dates are flexible to see when fares are at their lowest.

3.      The Home Base: Gaslamp Hostel

Why waste money on a $300 a night hotel when you’re only planning to sleep and shower there. Save your $$ for nights out. Hostels are becoming more and more popular in the USA as more people discover that they can be stylish, comfortable and most importantly, affordable!  Gaslamp Hostel has high ratings for friendly staff, cleanliness, comfort and it’s located right in the middle of the Gaslamp Quarter action on 5th Avenue. The hostel has both dorms and private rooms.

4.      Use parking apps or rent a parking pass

SpotHero, ParkWhiz, Way.com and AirGarage are some of the apps available to savvy travelers to find deals in the city on parking. Or, rent a parking pass at a substantial discount from Gaslamp Hostel. It’s especially a huge savings when there’s a baseball game or concert as the area garages hike rates during big events. Rates can go as high at $30 for a few hours during an event, but Gaslamp Hostel keeps their parking pass rental at just $20 a night regardless of the area events.

5. Scout out Gaslamp Happy Hours

Almost every restaurant in the Gaslamp has happy hours. Most spots run deals from 4:00 PM to 6:30 PM.

  • The Field Irish Pub: An authentic pub with a great atmosphere. Grab a discounted Guinness and some potato skins to fuel up for the night.

  • Barleymash: This is the spot for our age group. It’s high-energy, usually has a DJ, and offers great deals on local craft beers and their famous loaded "Iron Fries."

  • Whiskey Girl: If you want cheap well drinks and a dance floor that starts early, this is your go-to. It’s unpretentious and easy on the bank account.   50% off all standard spirits, craft cocktails, beers, and wine by the glass. Also, rotating daily food specials (e.g., discounted versions of their famous flatbread pizzas, wings, or loaded fries

  •   Coin-Op Game Room (Gaslamp): Daily from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM, enjoy $5 select drafts, $6 wells, and $7 classic cocktails. You can also score half-off all appetizers, $2 cheese slices, and $10 full pizzas.

  •   GARAGE Kitchen + Bar: Available daily from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, they offer a staggering 51% off all drinks (excluding top shelf) and $3 off appetizers. You can also grab their signature Bob's Burger with fries for just $6.

  •   STK San Diego: A premier steakhouse experience featuring a daily "3 | 6 | 9" happy hour. Bites and drinks are priced at $3, $6, and $9—including deals on their famous Lil' BRG (sliders) with truffle fries.

  •   Bronze Bird: Located inside The Westin, this sleek spot runs a "5-4-3" happy hour Monday through Friday from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Deals include $5 wines and cocktails, $4 draft beers, and $3 small bites.

  • Wine Girl:  Happy hour options typically see select house wine glasses, prosecco, and signature wine cocktails discounted into the $8 to $11 range, accompanied by a few dollars off their small bites and curated charcuterie pairings. [1, 2, 3]

3. High Vibes, Zero Dollars: Free Things to Do

San Diego’s best assets are its nature and its weather—both of which are free.

  • Balboa Park: You don’t have to pay for the museums to enjoy the park. Walk through the Botanical Building (free!), check out the Spanish Village Art Center, and find a spot on the grass for a picnic.

  • Sunset Cliffs: Drive 15 minutes to Ocean Beach. Grab a $6 burrito from a local taco shop, sit on the edge of the cliffs, and watch the sun go down. It’s a million-dollar view for the price of a bean and cheese burrito.

  • La Jolla Cove: Go see the sea lions lounging on the rocks. It costs $0 to walk the boardwalk and get some incredible photos of the Pacific.

  • Seaport Village: Walk along the harbor to see the USS Midway and the "Unconditional Surrender" (the giant kissing sailor) statue. It’s a great way to log some miles and see the skyline.

4. Pro Budget Tips for the Savvy Traveler

  • The Taco Rule: Skip the sit-down restaurants with "California Cuisine" labels. Head to any of the local taco places. You’ll get better food for a third of the price.

  • Walk or use Transit: The Gaslamp and Downtown are very walkable. If you need to go further, the trolley or buses are only $2.50 per ride or $5 for an all day pass.

  • BYO-Beach Gear: Grab a towel from the hostel and find your own patch of sand at any of the city’s popular beaches.

The Bottom Line

A weekend in San Diego doesn't have to be a financial disaster. By staying at the Gaslamp Hostel, utilizing their discounted parking, and hitting the Happy Hour circuit, you can experience the best of the West Coast and still have money left over for your morning cold brew.

Ready to pack? San Diego is waiting.
